I have preferred to be alone for as long as I can remember. I like my small world to be as safe, clean, tidy, and predictable as possible. Most of my contact with the outside world has been through the internet. A window that a tyrannical and regressive regime, fearing the awareness and solidarity of the people, has done everything in its power to limit. As a teenager, my interests had nothing to do with Iranian culture or politics. I was so absorbed in my own world that I never for a single moment thought that my country was going to have any significant importance in my life. But by the time I got to university, I had to step outside my comfort zone.

I felt like a stranger in my homeland, living in exile. Though I was aware of the existence of false beliefs and outworn thinking, I was not prepared to confront them. Also, with the widespread systematic repression by the regime, I saw no prospect of improvement. It was as if I was in the path of a powerful current that, no matter how much I resisted, would eventually sweep me away to desolation. My eyes were opened to reality for the very first time, and this awakening was so painful and bleak that I have not been able to leave my suicidal thoughts behind ever since.

Although I had not seen a war until last year, the mere existence of a corrupt and rapacious regime was enough for my country to gradually become devastated. This war has been imposed on our people by an ignorant, selfish, and oppressive minority. Even though my generation does not want this war, it is the one paying its price. A generation that is caught between the regime’s bullets and the bombings. A generation that faces a desolate past, a futile present, and an uncertain future. A generation that has had to fight for its most basic rights throughout decades, while many people in free countries do not even consider the blessings they have been given.

While an occupying and terrorist regime slaughters innocent people with ease, other countries watch in silence. How come some people see freedom and prosperity as their absolute right and take it for granted, yet see it as a plus for others? How come some people are willing to secure their privileges even at the cost of others being deprived of their most basic needs? How come some people allow themselves to judge things they cannot even comprehend? Phrases like “human rights” and “humanitarian aid” have been used so many times to justify opportunism and profiteering that they have become hollowed.

What can you do when your own government, along with foreign governments, is only seeking to dominate and exploit you, and your life is worthless to them? What can you do when not only the prosperous people of other countries, but even the oppressed people of your own country, do not empathise with you? In such situations, remaining in the role of victim is of no use. To navigate through this hardship safely, we must support each other. We are neither forlorn nor forgotten, but we have been marginalised by oppression and repression since the interests of those in power lie in isolating us and depleting us of our spirit.

I despise double standards. I despise bullies setting the rules. I despise how developed countries talk about international laws when it benefits them and ignore the very same laws they have made when it does not suit their intentions. I despise power in the hands of evil people. I despise regimes holding us people hostage. I despise how the narrative of innocent people gets lost in the distorted propaganda of regimes. Sometimes silence is more horrifying than explosions. Sometimes the dread of destruction pales in comparison to the hope of reconstruction. Sometimes nothing changes unless everything changes.
